On June 29 we proudly hosted the third WeStream meetup.

This time we directed our attention toward the fascinating world of frontend development, with a particular focus on supporting various platforms (smart tv or Android tv) and testing. After the introduction into the smart tv testing by Michal Topinka, we had the pleasure to host Martin Češka from Suitest presenting their solution that's revolutionizing OTT application testing. Showmax also presented what the Android team accomplished with Compose, and talked about adopting new solutions.

Varnish nám v Showmaxu pomáhá udržet stabilní platformu i přes velmi rychlé nárůsty počtu requestů kvůli live sportům. Ale co dělat, když jsou requesty tak variabilní, že i přes cachování requestů je API přestává stíhat odbavovat? Ukážeme vám jak jsme tento problém vyřešili na našem Catalogue API, kde přidání další vrstvy komplexity a cachování mezivýsledků nám pomohlo přežít špičky requestů při World Cupu a dokonce i něco ušetřit.

DDD, CQRS, DRY, Git flow, microservices, monorepos ... svět technologií nikdy nespí a za každým rohem se skrývá nový hype. Jak jsme se s tím u nás vypořádávali v čase? Jaké chyby jsme udělali? Co bychom dnes udělali jinak? V tomto talku se budu snažit předat praktické i teoretické rady na základě dlouholeté zkušenosti s vývojem unicorn startupu.

evitaDB rychlá databáze pro e-commerce

Doménově specifické databáze nabízejí vývojářům řadu výhod, které databáze s obecným zaměření nabídnout nemohou. Cílem evitaDB je pokrýt požadavky projektů v e-commerce a nabídnout vývojářům takové API, které bude pokrývat všechny základní potřeby v této oblasti, v takové formě, jakou jsou zvyklí konzumovat (GraphQL, REST, gRPC, nativní Java a C#). Kromě úspory času vývojářů cílí také na vysokou propustnost a nízkou latenci komplexních dotazů díky práci s in-memory indexy. Pojďme si ukázat jak takové API vypadá, jak vypadá dotazovací jazyk, jak si databázi lokálně za pár vteřin rozjedete a v čem vám může pomoci.

Our chosen theme this time is a bit poetic: we'll be exploring the lifecycle of a movie within video streaming libraries. Dive into the intricacies of how we process these movies, enabling users to enjoy them, as we like to say, anytime and anywhere. Your insights and presence will truly enrich the conversation.

LIVE STREAMS at CZECH TELEVISION

Our presentation focuses first on the development of the iVysilani streaming department and the conditions in which it operates. Through illustrative examples, we describe the production workflow and technical background. The second part of the talk presents our own live broadcast production and a general analysis of our content delivery.

SHOWMAX's LIVE STREAM FLOW

We offer a sneak peek into the Showmax setup of the live-stream flow. You will learn how we manage to stream live events in 4K, and how we stream to both mobiles and TV screens in a market where satellite dishes are still the norm. We will touch on the different experience of streaming video-on-demand content and live encoding and will close with final remarks on delivering the best possible user experience on any device and across all sub-saharan Africa.

The follow-up discussion covered anything speakers might have omitted.

Network situation in Africa (Radek Zajíc, Content Delivery Team Lead, Showmax)

Have you ever wondered what the African Internet infrastructure looks like? What is it like to run a content delivery network there? And manage it from Europe? Wonder no more! This talk will uncover some of the differences between European and African Internet infrastructure, the challenges of deploying infrastructure across the African continent, and the common troubles you may run into, should you ever want to offer video content to the users in Africa.

Don’t miss a chance to ask us about streaming the recent #FIFAWorldCup Qatar in 4K (ultra-high-definition), or about high-volume streaming – In November, when delivering our biggest broadcasting event yet, Showmax announced a 111% year-on-year growth.
The World Cup opening match was by far the most watched sports event in Showmax history and we managed to stream it flawlessly, just like the rest of the games!
